Every morning I take my dog out for a good two hours of exercise - bicycling, running, walking, hiking - anything to get us outdoors to one of the many beautiful natural settings in and around San Francisco. Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, the Presidio, Land's End, and the nearby Marin Headlands have all become our favorite haunts. In 2008, shortly after my 60th birthday, I began a series of paintings and poems that grew spontaneously from these daily outings. You can say it was a case of one passion leading to another. The paintings are all oil-on-canvas, 30" x 30" in size. As I wanted to share them more widely than possible through the traditional gallery, I decided to put them in book form. Because of the vivid colors, the lighthearted imagery and easily accessible poetry, many have remarked at how well-suited the book is for both children and adults, not to mention dog-lovers! For those wanting to know a little more about the art work, I've included notes on the paintings, along with photographs of the locations that inspired the imagery and poetry. There are also brief bios of myself and of my dog and muse, Nikki, the Dharma Dog.

When I read the introductory page, I immediately felt the "Oh!" level of surprise which a poet once taught me was the way to know you were experiencing something special. Proceeding into the book, the short poems and the opposite-page-filling paintings present vivid complementary pairs of small and large; image-making text before swaths of bright colors enveloping focused subjects.The three aspects of the book, the poetry, the paintings, and the biographical text w/photos go together well. (By biographical I mean the storytelling about the artist, the Dharma dog, and the poems and paintings themselves.) They combine to achieve a depth of feeling.Feeling about what, you ask? Well, I don't want to spoil the surprises. Suffice it to say that Leon Sun is an artist who has mastered many styles of poetry and painting and brought them together in what another friend once told me, when explaining what it means to show someone else a view of stunning flowers, is a beautiful gift.

My friends might be surprised that I liked this book because I am not a dog lover. But the cover picture of Nikki aka Dharma Dog might have turned me into dog lover. The poems evoke simplicity and beauty that we can each find in our lives if we take a minute to slow down and experience it. My favorite was "Nikki in the Garden" where Nikki tried to entice a statue of Buddha to play with him. "Thank you, said the Buddha, but I'm happy just sitting here." The paintings and the artwork that accompany the poems are stunning. Dharma Dog is one dog that I would like to know.
